About Me

I am a professional sponsored rock climber and the first Canadian in history to climb a grade of 5.15. I am an energetic, patient, and understanding person. I graduated in Engineering Physics from Queen's University and was awarded the gold medal for achieving the highest standing in the graduating class of 2008. I worked as an Engineer-In-Training for 3 years before my focus turned to rock climbing full time. Providing tutoring services has been an excellent way for me to continue using my academic skills. I have been tutoring and helping students succeed for over 10 years. I am completely familiar with the Alberta curriculum.

Subjects Offered

My focus is Alberta high school Grade 9 to 12. Specifically, Math 9, Science 9, Math 10-C, Science 10, Math 20-1, Math 20-2, Chemistry 20, Physics 20, Math 30-1, Math 30-2, Math 31, Chemistry 30, and Physics 30. I also tutor equivalent Grade 9 to 12 courses in regions other than Alberta.

I provide PAT and Diploma exam preparation.

In addition, I also have tutoring experience with curricula from other provinces in Canada, elementary school math, as well as university Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Engineering courses. Please inquire if you are looking for tutoring for a course that is not listed!

How Tutoring Works

I am able to travel to various communities in Calgary NW to meet at your home or other convenient locations, such as public libraries. I also offer online tutoring.

Every student is unique with different skills and needs and students may want to approach tutoring in various ways. I am flexible to accommodate that.

Typically, there may be particular areas of concern and/or upcoming quizzes or tests to prepare for. During tutoring we can work on the student's needs through homework questions, worksheets, assignments, old tests, etc. by explaining missing concepts and developing strong problem solving skills. I can also bring additional material for students to work on. I am also happy to look ahead and teach students upcoming material if desired.

Specifically for online tutoring, I am open to meeting on a variety of platforms such as Skype, Zoom, or Google Meet. You will need a webcam and microphone. During online tutoring, it can be difficult to pick up on body language cues and I encourage students to interrupt as necessary if there are any questions or if working through a problem is going at too fast or too slow of a pace. Students will be able to see my screen as I work through various problems and I can send over the notes after the session is finished.

Tutor Style

My tutoring style is to find different ways to explain concepts in order to adapt to a particular student's needs and learning style. I strive to develop deeper fundamental and conceptual connections and develop general problem solving skills. I enjoy working alongside students and I enjoy seeing my students succeed. I understand how difficult some topics are for students and I am very empathetic when trying to bridge the gap of understanding. I believe I would be a great addition to any student’s learning journey.

I have worked with students from many different backgrounds, including students with dyslexia, dyscalculia, and other learning disabilities. Most of the students I have worked with have enjoyed significant improvements in their grades.

Fees

My fee is a flat rate of $60 per hour. The minimum session length is 1 hour. Sessions longer than 1 hour are prorated. E.g. 30 minutes = $30. I accept cash, Interac E-Transfer, and PayPal.

Reviews

"Evan began tutoring my son in grade 9 during a challenging period marked by poor attendance. Despite being recommended for math15 in high school, my son opted for math10C with Evan as his tutor. Under Evan's guidance, my son's confidence in math flourished, transforming it into his favorite subject. My son always says “Evan makes everything make sense”! Achieving overall marks in the 90s, he excelled with scores of 93 and 97 on his final exams. Evan's reliability, timeliness, flexibility, and personalized teaching skills make him an exceptional tutor. Without hesitation, I recommend Evan to anyone seeking support, whether struggling with content or aiming to refine and enhance their skills. Thank you, Evan!"

"Evan was great to work with. Easy to communicate with and set up a time. He has a very obvious passion for math and he was able to help my son catch up on some work that had been missed due to sport training schedule. We will hire him again for sure when needed."

"Evan is a great tutor. He explains concepts in an interesting way, and has discussions with you that go deep into the material. He uses and teaches the fastest way to approach a question, and this really helped a lot. My grades skyrocketed as I started meeting with him. I will strongly recommend him"

"Evan did an excellent job tutoring our son in grade 11 academic math. Evan is extremely professional and very reliable. He was able to help fill in the knowledge gaps that were the result of schools moving online at the end of last year and helped our son stay on track with each unit during this year’s accelerated quadmesters. He is highly recommended. Thank you very much Evan!"

"Evan has helped our son with math and chemistry and we’re so glad we found him. In March, he wasn’t passing chemistry and was sitting at a 70% in math. Today his chemistry and math marks have both gone up at least 15% each. Evan has done an excellent job helping our son with his understanding in both courses. We will definitely continue to work with him!"

"Evan is an excellent teacher with knowledge and skills to help the student."

"Evan has been helping our son during the first term of his final year of high school in physics and maths. He’s been a terrific help, he knows the course requirements, teaches with focus and has an easy going, pleasant vibe. He has always been flexible and on time. We’re planning to do it all again next semester, adding chemistry into the mix. We rate him 11/10 - couldn’t have hoped for a better tutor!"

"I am so glad that I managed to find Evan to help me with upgrading high school courses. Having been out of high school for 7 years and trying to once again tackle Chemistry and Mathematics 30, I would have been hopelessly lost if not for Evan. With his help, I managed to raise my overall average in both course by almost 20% from my old high school grades. Under his tutelage I even managed to achieve grades of 80% and higher in math, which for me was something I had not managed to do since elementary school. This surpassed my expectations. Evan was patient, professional and was diligent in making sure I truly understood a concept before moving on to the next. His schedule was flexible which was a lifesaver as I work full time with odd hours. I would highly recommend Evan to anyone who is looking to not only improve their grades, but to truly excel at a subject."

She is doing math 31.

"We are very happy with the tutorial sessions Evan provided our daughter. Evan effectively explained and clarified all Math 30-1 concepts that our daughter struggled with and set her up for improved success in preparation for unit tests and the diploma exam. The fact that our daughter took Math 30-1 in French was not an issue, she simply translated to English for Evan and he was able to help her. Thank you very much!"

Tips for Successful Self Directed Learning

After years of being conditioned to traditional classroom style learning, a sudden change to self directed learning can be challenging to adjust to. There are many benefits of self directed learning including working at your own pace, setting up a personal work space, and being able to do things you wouldn't normally be able to do in a classroom such as eating loud snacks.

Here are some tips to successful self-directed learning aimed primarily at math and sciences.

Find an area where you will not get distracted easily. If you are at home, try to work in a room all to yourself and keep your phone out of reach. Either find a space with no distractions or clear out any distractions from the work space. Try to spend roughly the same amount of time on school as you would normally.

Stay organized, make a study plan, and try to stick to it but be flexible to make changes to the plan. Scheduling particular time slots during the day for school work can help stay on track. Don't leave things to the last minute. Long term deadlines can seem far away and it's easy to lose focus. Setting little goals can help stay on track. For example "If I finish this lesson by this time, then I can spend the rest of the day doing my hobby."

Follow along and actually work through the example problems instead of just watching the video or reading the lesson. If you feel confident, attempt the example questions before looking at the worked out solutions. If a problem involves several steps, try to think about why the steps are being performed as opposed to simply memorizing the steps.

Practice what you have just learned by doing the homework. Try a few questions immediately after the lesson while it is fresh. Try a few more questions the next day before moving on the the next lesson. Check your answers if they are available. If you've made a mistake, try to look over the question and figure out where and why there was a mistake. If you run out of questions, it is helpful to re-attempt the example problems in the lesson without looking at the solution and seeing if you can get the answer. If you get stuck, the worked out solutions are right there for reference.

You are not alone and have many resources available. Teachers are still available, feel free to ask them questions. You can still study together with your peers, perhaps set up a web conference with your friends and work through lessons together. Online notes, textbooks, and the internet are all valuable resources. Be careful with information found on the internet but information provided by credible websites is generally good.

Remember to take breaks particularly if you start having trouble focusing, drink plenty of water, and remember to eat as well. Have fun with it!
